top Guide book top
Footprint Argentina 2004. We get along with it quite good at the moment. Eventhough more than one person told us that the only difference between the Footprint Handbook Southamerica and this guide book is the font size. That is a bit disappointing since we bought this book for more information about the country. The prices seem to be out of date already...

top Places we went to top
Tilcara A nice village on the way from Salta to the border with Bolivai. Here are interesting ruins and lots of time for relaxation.
Salta One of the nicest cities in Argentina. Clean with lots of historic buildings and an pub mile. Salta is the start and end point for the "Train de las nubes" which leaves every Thursday and Saturday.
Cafayate A smaler place than Salta. Very cosy with lots of vineyards around it. The vine icecream is excellent too. The nearby Quebrada de Cafayate has lots of scuril rockformations to offer which can be discovered by bike.
Tafi del Valle A quiet mountain village where there is not much to do besides relaxing.
Tucuman A terrible big city. One of the biggest in Argentina. Not recommended by us.
La Rioja The opposite of Tucuman. A small provincial capital with a nice flair. Quiet and good meats in the reastaurants :-)
Chilecito The second biggest town in the province La Rioja - even smaller than La Rioja town. Again some vineyards around and a good point to go to the Valle de la luna from.
Cordoba A nice modern city. A historic town centre with a very interesting square with Jesuit church and University. The region around has some of the old Estancias of the Jesuits to offer.
Puerto Madryn A town in the north of Patagonia. From here you get a good oportunity to watch the whales from the Peninsula Valdes which is near by.
Trelew The cheaper option for Puerto Madryn. From here you can go to the Wales and to the Penguins for the same money and stay much cheaper.
Rio Gallegos There is not much to see or do in this town. But if you get stuck here because of the lack of bus connections there is lots of entertainment around and some cosy pubs.
Ushuaia The town at "The end of the world". This phrase is used to make everthing very expensive which is just walking on my nervs. But the surroundings are beautiful. In Summer apperantly crowded!
El Calafate A more or less sad touristic town in the middle of the Patagonian dessert. Well people only come here because of the well know glacier Perito Moreno which is spectacular! Or they go the the hiking area of El Chalten and pass through El Calafate.
Esquel This town is a quiet place on the southern edge of the Lakes district. From here you could go to the National Park Los Alerces. But be aware that the transport options outside of the really high season are limited! In Winter the skieing seem to be good here too!
Bariloche The oposite of Esquel - a bustling town with hundreds and hundreds of tourist. But we did enjoy it anyway. The scenery which surrounds this place is stunning and there are several options for excursions into the mountains!
Mendoza The big city just below the highes peak of the Americas - the Aconcagua! Surrounded by the many vineyards it makes a good stop to taste some of Argentinas vines and mayby climb the high peak just next door...

top Transportation top
Buses are very comfortable in Argentina. As well as different from route to route. The service varies. On long distance buses you will get food and drinks. But take some extra since the amount varies! Films are usually shown and even free Bingo played! TAC is not at all recommended whereas ANDESMAR is one of the best companies we encountered.
